PV2 Roberto Di Giovine’s Story
PV2 Roberto Di Giovine recently completed GED Plus, and offered to share his experience and opinions with us.
“When I was first told about the GED Plus program, I thought, 'Cool, two weeks of school in Arkansas.' Even though my recruiter never said it would be easy, somehow I’d pictured two weeks of studying and vacation.”
Upon arrival at Camp Robinson, he says, “I discovered a completely different reality. It was about discipline and hard work.” An even bigger surprise was that the program teaches more than math, science and grammar. “They prepare you for a military career,” PV2 Di Giovine explains. “On a typical day, you learn about Basic Combat Training [BCT] drills and ceremonies, military courtesies, Army values, General Orders and Soldier Creed. The course is valuable experience Soldiers will use a lot during their first few years in service.
“Because of GED Plus, I’m a better man and a better Soldier,” PV2 Di Giovine continues. “I have more knowledge and confidence. I feel ready for the challenges of a military career in the Army National Guard.”
His advice to other potential GED Plus-goers? “There are very few jobs available to those who didn’t complete high school. Of course every job has its own dignity, but why not expect more? GED Plus is the perfect opportunity for anyone looking for that second chance in life through higher education.”
