View Full Version : Moving up an Assigned date for Basic?

My oldest son is scheduled to leave for Ft. Jackson on March 3 ’09. He is an O9S and currently in RSP. His younger brother just announced his engagement. Both he and his fiancé work for a school district, and for many reasons, including spring break, the best date for the wedding is the first week of April.
My youngest wants to ask his brother if it would be possible to move up his basic training from March to January so he would be back in time to attend the wedding. We don’t know what that involves or if it is something my oldest son’s superiors would even consider. He doesn’t want to ask his brother to do something impossible. Also, if asking for a change would be frowned upon by his superiors. I thought I would ask…. Thanks in advance for your response.

He is not part of an "actual unit", so there is no actual commander but have him ask his recruiter to check with MEPS to get an earlier ship date. Nothing frowned about wanting to start BCT earlier. They will probably think he is too hooah.

I would encourage your son to talk to his Chain of command or recruiter, but i would also encourage your other son to consider changing the date to accommodate his brother should a date change not work out.

I am actually in the process of moving my ship date from May to January. I had to talk to one of our RSP office staff. She has sent in a request to see if they have any open slots, so now I just get to wait and hope they can find me a spot. Either ask your recruiter, or talk to your RSP cadre.

Keep ontop of them without becoming annoying. I've seen a few times those exact requests get lost in the shuffle.

Just giving you some hope... I just got a call from my RSP on Friday, and they were able to find me a new ship date: January 21st. Woo! :D I was surprised to hear from them so early...it took less than 2 weeks, and I didn't even have to annoy them too much! So keep trying!

I hate to play devils advocate here but have you thought of maybee trying to get the date pushed back ? Im not saying its going to happen but what if he gets injured? then it is entirely possible his stay at basic could be a little longer than planned. Just throwing that out there...

I just asked for mine to get pushed back from Nov until after the first of the year. They really don't want to push back a date unless your current date will cause some kind of hardship on your immediate family. The RSP unit takes a hit on numbers if your date is pushed back. I luckily got it moved back, however, too far. I was looking for Jan or Feb and got April. Now, I have to try to get it moved up some... The saga continues... lol....

You can change your ship date but you will need to hurry to change it cause ships get filled up and there might not be any room for him. You need to talk to his recruiter and he should help you work it out. I have seen it happen so i know its possible.
