Ok, I am back asking another "dumb question" lmao. When you go to MEPS, and they make you do the 1 mile, is it allowed to walk a portion of it, or jog it? Or do you necessarily have to literally "RUN" the entire length. Thanks for your replies!:) I am starting FULL FORCE today with my running. Today to my amazement I ran 1/4 of a mile straight. For me that's awesome, it's the most i've been able to do considering I am a former smoker. I've been quit now for just about 3 days. Having absolutly no problem because there is enough motivation in me at this point. Thanks guys!

Run at MEPS? They don't make you run at MEPS. Unless something has changed.

You are allowed to walk, if you must, but it will definitely hurt your time. you should be able to run a mile without walking, or you're going to have a rough time at basic training.
Yeayyyy you!!! I know the feeling. When I first started the enlistment process, I could just barely run one block. That was about 6 weeks ago. I still can't run the whole mile, or even most of it. But- last time on the treadmill- I ran a full 1/2 mile before having to slow to a walk. My timed mile went from 13:40 to 12:20~ and then I got my new shoes. Oooooh, aaaahhhh! They really do make a difference. Last time I tried, I did my mile in 10:31!!! And that's just about where I need to be to get into BCT.
Now, I realize all you non-couch potatoes might be laughing your tushies off~ but for those of us who are "fitness challenged"- it's a huge step!
Just keep pushing and pushing, the endurance will come, just work thru the fatigue. The brain will give up long before your body actually has to. I found the shoes make a huge difference, plus I go out with my MP3 player. Thanks for posting; I know I'm sooo proud of the steps I've made~ but compared to where others are, I was a bit embarrassed to say anything!:D
Keep going, YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Well said. Do not quit, do not stop. Just push through it and keep running every day or every other day until you can't run anymore. Before you know it in a few weeks you will be running your mile in less than 8:30, not because you have to but because your body demands it!
Good luck.

I too could run one block before I had to stop and walk, now after a month I run four miles non-stop every other day...I gotta do it everyday though :)

Well yesterday was in general "a bad day for me". I was so mad at myself that to my surprise I ran/walked a mile in 15 minutes. Not bad coming from a once 18 minute mile. So maybe I was just downing myself for no reason. Now I can use the 15 minute as a marker. Today I am aiming for 14 at least. I know for my age/weight group I need a 10:30, so I guess I have a long way to go. I have approximatly 9/10 weeks before I make the appt for the MEPS, and I was told I would be shipped out to BCT around a month after.

Thank you! That gives me hope! Way to go!!!

Don't stress about not being able to run your mile fast enough. My case was similiar to yours only two years ago. Now I run 25 miles a week, no problem. What I started doing once my one mile time was down sligltly was to run 1.5-2 miles at a very slow pace. Once you do that a few times then you will probably have more suscess on your one mile (It's worked for several people and myself).
Everyones advice has been realtivily good so far. Good luck!

I would not go as far to say that someone would never make it...Running is something that can be worked on. If you put your mind to it you can do it, it will just take work. But don't say that they would never make it.
If youre having problems running, just keep doing it. Dont over-work yourself because you can get injured, but dont slack. Everytime you run, just try and aim for a time thats a little bit lower than the previous. Also, do not start off your mile at a dead sprint or even at a fast pace. I find it better to start off at a slower pace and once you reach the half-way point then speed it up. That may not work for you, but I was just tryin to give some pointers.
Good luck!!

Hi. I AM IN TROUBLE! I can't run. The most I can run striaght is 1/4 of a mile. Mainly it's my breathing tht's an issue while doing so. I was horrified because my boyfriend (who's prior service) was with me when I failed at the track. He tried pushing me and my body just failed, although I didn't stop walking. I ended up doing a 2 mile walk. Then got home and walked another 2 miles.
I've been reading these messages, and talking to my man. It soothes, but doesn't quite help these situations. Is this the way PT goes for everyones fIrst time? Did any triatheletes or other highly physical people start off like me? CAN I GET THROUGH THIS? Holy good god- I can pass EVERYTHING ELSE! Not to mention the emotional and verbal parts of BCT. It's just the dang run. I know, i'll shut my mouth and do something about it. I hear there is an 8mile run, somewhere near the end of BCT. All i'm worried about is getting a 2mile run done in my time frame of 21.??
Thanks again guys. Nervous and Nervous...lol:(
1 more thing, if this helps, to describe my profile is this. Yesterday at the track about halfway in, I got so upset at myself I put the pedal to the metal and super sprinted along 1 long side of the track. I actually had a less of a hard time than to jog it. I was always a better sprinter than a runner, jogger.
