Hello I want to join the national guard but I am about 90 pounds over weight. Yes I am a fat body wanting into the military. I am able to jog 3 miles in 40 minutes, yes I'm also a pretty slow runner. I am trying to eat lean cuisines twice a day as meal suppliments but its really a meal as you already know I would like any reasonable suggestions that may come from thoes of you have been in my situation or who have helped someone in my situation. I'm trying to lose this weight so I can sign and ship off next december.

What is your height and weight? Also, if you know your body fat % that will be helpful as well. Start off by just being active for 30 minutes to 1 hour a day. You don't need to run, just go for a walk, play a sport...anything to just get you active. Depending on your age, weight loss supplements can help as well. Since you aren't shipping off until next December, you'll have plenty of time to lose the weight.

Hey tate. My name is mike and I have the same exact problem as you do. I am over a hundred pounds over weight. Me and my dad have started a weight loss program. We bought these weight loss shakes from GNC, and we will use those as a suppliment for two meals out of the day. Yester day I power walked for three miles around my neighborhood. You might want to try that. But your body is probably retaining water. So make sure you drink plenty of it, and stay active every day.

 I'm 5'8 296 as of this morning, I was shocked cause I only worked out twice last week and when i finnished I was around 298 but I thought it was lost water. I run because it feels more exciting than walking. I love running now I just don't get too much time and I always feel rushed because of my schedual. I try to get my body outside of its comfort zone for atleast 40 minutes.

Yes I try to do 60 pushups per day and I workout at the YMCA 5 days a week and I'm trying to get me a punching bag at home so I can have a cardio workout at the house and to tone my upper body up.

Right now im trying to get in shape running, eating little "better"(not great hehe)Guess when i get in better shape i will feel like doing more work atleast i hope so. I hope when i get out of basic i don't turn back to clay.

I am trying to eat lean cuisines twice a day as meal suppliments
As i remember last time i looked lean cuisines were about the same cals as normal microwave dinners. Some even had more when you compared the weight. It's still better then most but i would check out the others you can save some cash.

I lost about 80 pounds couple years back best food i can think of are
sugar free jello. No fat very low cals taste good.
When you see a movie or something buy some surgar free candy. No one can go cold turkey :) Just watch out for the type they add in a ton of fat to replace the surgar.
fat free baloney, lettuce tomato and onion. I would add on mustard because it has almost 0 cals unlike catsup. mustard on eggs isn't that bad too after you try it. the baloney had around 10 cals compared to 150 of other baloney. ham/turkey was around 80-100.

at fast food places
Salad ONLY if they have fat free dressing. Chicken if they have it.
grilled chicken sandwith without cheese and there sauce. Even if they are good they add a ton of cals allmost in the range of two burgers to one with.
Taco bell, bean burritos without cheese are about there best around 300 cals.

and always diet soda. Hope that helps it's what worked for me. but i still have to drop another 20 pounds haha

Hey,

Run every night and do sit ups and push ups. Don't take any diet pills it just screws your system up. I use to be 260 6'3 now im 232 in just 4 weeks I ran every night and stuff. The two things they are looking for is your weight or body %. Good Look Byron any questions ask me :)
Whats your age by the way?

Chris.

Hint: On the bike or what ever you use . After 10-15 mins you feel like you can't go on just keep going and your over that bump then you feel alot better. Because your pumped up. Also don't drink no coke or pepsi. Only drink Milk and Water it makes your system work faster.

For anyone who is trying to attain a physical fitness standard it is important to note that this is not an easy thing to do... and there are no quick ways to do it.

AVOID DIET PILLS AND FADS LIKE THE PLAGUE... in the case of Phen fen and ephedra - they just might kill you... well maybe not, but they have.

The truth is you must increase calorie burning coupled with decreased calorie intake. To loose wieght you need to focus on high aerobic challenges, and avoid wieghts. You need to increase your stamina and body strength which helps to retool your body.

After several weeks if you maintain a routine of stretching and excercise, proper diet with small portions and no junk foods or heavily processed foods, you will have started a habit of better health. At the point that you attain your goal of wieght loss and incresed body strength you can look at adding wieghts to your workout schedule. Snacks? well who can live without them, just in moderation and perhaps more fruit and nuts than twinkies and moonpies...

Diet and Excercise also tend to be cheaper than wasting hard earned money on fad pills that promise the world and deliver nothing but more late night marketing infomercials. If they did work doctors would prescribe them and the world would be a slimmer place without any effort.

Here are some sites you can use to help you along:

http://www.hooah4health.com

http://www.apft.net

http://health.discovery.com

There are many free resources online and in the real world to help you in achieving your goal! Do not rely on opinions, rely on proven facts... in the end DIET and EXCERCISE will be the answer you need.

I also would make this recommendation... My wife got me a subscription for Men's Health magazine (http://www.menshealth.com/cda/homepage.do) for the holidays - well to be honest I really do like it and there is a lot of good information (the verifiable type) about diet and excercise... among other things :)

For the women out there, there is also a Women's Health magazine (http://www.womenshealthmag.com/)... although I cannot attest to it :)

Best of luck, and I hope this helps!!!

Well as of wednesday I ran 3 miles in 36 minutes and felt good. As of now I am about 296 or 297 and still dropping. I got back in my groove now and trying to stay there. I'm running 3 miles in 36 minutes and I still go 40-42 minutes on the treadmill so I walk as a brisk pace on an incline.

Motivation is a mutha:D

At your weight i would just walk. You will add on another 20 mins to your 3 mile workout but you will save your knees and joints. You will burn the same calories no matter what. You can start running when you get down in weight.

Good luck keep up the hard work.

You’re a big guy. Im 6'4 230. I know your muscles and joints are probably very strong but this is what I do you might want to do this if you have a GYM.

1st: I usually do about 10 or 15 pulls up then I Go get on the bike and set it at random or hilly and put it at a good level then stay on it keep it at a good speed 8.0 or 8.5. After about 5 or 6 mins your body being to say I can't do it or im not doing it. You just stop for a sec drink some water or don't stop and get some water and then start up. And its painful I know because I do it all the time then after about 15 or 20 mins your pumped.

2nd : Get on the treadmill (or how ever you spell it) get at a good walking speed then after a min or two start to jog you feel you cabs start to hurt just run for about 7 or 8 mins then walk then do it over without the bike.

3rd: Your all hot go home relax and do the same thing the next day and don’t work out every day at least take a day or two during the week off to relax your body.

What you need to do every night do as many sit-ups as you can and then once you can’t do any more roll over and do push ups and then roll back over and do sit ups. After you do that a couple of time you won’t be able to do any more PS up SU because you are all tired.

Also if you can get up early before you catch the bus or you go to work try to walk or jog a mile in 10-15 min. gets your blood pumping.

You will start to lose weight quick.

Also don’t drink soft drinks at all water is the best I do not know about power aid but I know coke and Pepsi isn’t good let me tell you how I know I didn’t drink a soft drink for a week or two then on a Sunday I drunk a coke or two and then Monday you probably think its all out of your system well no its not because that night it was twice as painful when I went to work out. I drink power aid and water most and a glass or two of milk a night. That’s just me. But I use to weigh 255 that was a couple of weeks ago 3-5 weeks.

Good Luck

Im kinda in the same boat as you, but a few things i would suggest. (just from personal experience) Take me -- im 5'11" and weight 298 as of yesterday, im not proud that i let my body slip over the years, but im enlisting in august so, i kicked myself into high gear. in the last 6 weeks i have been working out 6 days a week. and in the last week i lost 7.5 pounds. So i know this works. workout like you have been doing but mix it up, for me i go to the gym 3 days a week and go to the pool 3 days a week. i mix it up, letting my body not get into the regular cycle. at the gym i do the treadmill for 30 minutes (started at 2.1 now up to a constant 2.9-3.0 for 30 minutes.) first. then do the free weights and machines. i do that every other day in the morning. (so monday, wednesday and fridays) then on tuesdays i do this water arobics thing (sounds girlish, but they make you sweat in water too. for 1 hour) then on thursdays i do an hour of laps with an hour of water arobics and on saturdays i do 1mile in laps. on sundays i rest, i relax go play some paintball and just chill, come monday i start again. ive done it for 6 weeks havent missed a day, (except sundays) ive had so much amazing energy, that if i have time i go for a 20 minute jog in the evenings. I also do pushups in the morning (6-12) and in the evening i do another (6-12) depends on how sore the shoulder muscles are, dont want to strain them, and be put back a few days.

Also with eating -- im personally on jenny craig. with the occasional stop at subway for my 6" (230 calorie) sandwitch. but if you do the crusines i wouldnt weight watchers has better healther frozen meals. also make sure you get plenty of vegs and fruits. with out them you could workout tons and not go anywere. also drink plenty of water. and another little hint that has worked great, is if you work out in the mornings first thing, drink a glass of milk and dont eat anything before you go. and wait at least 10-12 minutes before you start anything after drinking. the milk will get your blood cells up and running, and it will kick start the metabilisem for you. and you will be fuller thru out the day.

well i realize this is getting long, and its getting late, and i gotta get up early for working out in the morning. so hopefully all will go well, and post on your progress, its great to have some others in the same boat as myself. keep up the good work. takes time, but after 4-6 weeks, the weight should be dropping like butter. you might plateu for a few weeks, but then just change up the workout, and it will kick your body back into the burning mode.

by the way what you going in as for your mos.

Also have a bit less than 2k calories coming in if your that much over weight. more and you wouldnt lose as much and not any less than 1400 calories a day, and you would starve yourself, and your body would retain the fat cells.

Just lose 3-5 pounds a week and you be fine. You might not be able to enlist when its time but you just work at it. Don't RUN just jog all that weight is putting pressure on you ankles and stuff its not good for your weight when you get around 250-260 then start to run.

I can give you some more suggestions if you would like me to. Just say yah or no the next time you read this topic

When I workout I run for 36 minutes and walk for about 6 minutes uphill. I burn about 750 cals and I try to take in no more than 1500. I tend to get better fuel from stuff like sub sandwiches I try to not eat too much if anything fried after I get off of work and anything that I eat during the day is burned up before I eat dinner and with my Metabo being fired up right after I finish running some of the calories I consume are burned up even then which is good in my case, I think...... :D

Okay don't run everyday its going to cause your muscle to damage (If you are not use to running alot) I heard from somebody. Try to run every other day like M W F. Work your upper body T TH SAT go swimming or bench. Do sit ups every night and push ups every night. Also M-SAT try to get up in the morning and run so you can get you blood running. If you eat something heavy your going to up like a hambuger or something but the next day you will go back down to your normal weight then you will mostly likely drop a pound or to. If you work out that day that is.

Also eat a snack twice a day like an Apple or Orange.

How does that sound?

Well I think some of my weight loss was water I originally reported being at 295 but now its like I'm around 297 or 298. I'm still doing my running 3 miles in 36 minutes and I walk about 6 more minutes. I started to lift weight lightly yesterday to tone my upper body a little I was kinda hesitant about that but I figured that if I keep my weight around 75 to 80 pounds and do about 3 sets of 10 reps I wont bulk up too much too quick but my usual weight lifting is about 110-120 pounds when doing leg curls and stuff like that, around 200+ on my leg press and about 200 on my bench pressing. I'm going to use weights to burn some extra calories after I get though running.:o

I had to drop about 45-50lbs before I could join the Guard. I did it by jogging and paid very strict attention to my calories. I drank water all the time. I did get some of those powder sticks to put in the water to make my mind think I was drinking something else. Alot of weight loss is mental. Another trick I used was not weighing myself all the time. I think I got on the scales once maybe twice a week. After a few weeks your body might get used to the new diet and exercise. Change it up.. Mix in sports along with your jogging, keep the body guessing.. Smaller meals almost tiny meals spread throughout the day kept me from not being hungry and sustained my energy level. Just stick too it.. You will have good weeks and bad weeks, As long as you stay focused your good weeks WILL outnumber your bad weeks.

All these suggestion are great and they work. Along with exercise you must watch your calorie intake. Eat 5-6 small meals a day. After you workout use a protein shake to help your muscle to recover. A great book is Body for life. It takes time but as long as you use your common sense and find a program that works stick too it. Remember Rome was not built in a day. Keep it up if you have set your goal then work towards it and once you succeed there is nothing you can't do.:D

Hi, Im 6'3" 245 lbs, and 25% body fat. Last June, i was 6'2" 320, and about 33% bf. I just swore in the Guard on May 12, and im shipping out for BCT on the 25th of July. Some tips that I used to lose my weight are, like everybody else is saying, WORK OUT. Dont just run 3 miles in 36 minutes... thats kinda slow for one, and if you can do it easily, you need to mix it up. I started out running 2 miles in about 17 mins, and that wasnt easy at all, but after awhile, it became kinda "routine". I had hit a barrier as far as wieght loss goes as well. Well, I cant really say wieght loss persay; Im a big guy (I leg press about 800, bench about 300) so I pretty much knew I wasnt going to get in by wieght (I'm supposed to be 211), so I immediately started trying to lose inches. Measure your waist (parallel to the floor from your naval) and keep track of that. I lost about 3" in the first couple weeks. Its also great motivation to know that you are looking better. As I was saying though... When the 2 mile became "routine" I changed to only running 1 mile. But I was paying attention to my pace and my times, therefore pushing myself to go faster. It really helped boost my metabolism. Ask your recruiter about the 3 day diet also. It didnt work for me, but I know people that have used it and had it work for them. I also went bike riding whenever I could. Not as a workout, mind you, but just as a recreational activity. It also helps. Needless to say, I'm in pretty good shape now, but when I started, I was just like you. Today I jogged a mile in 7:50, which is about 5 minutes quicker than a year ago. Also, my waist was 52" and is now 41". As far as calorie intake, stay away from sodas and junkfood. If you drink Gatorade or Powerade, water it down. I drank a lot of flavored waters (they are calorie, sodium, and sugar free, and also 2/$1 at walmart) in place of the sodas. Also, my big downfall was Ramen noodles- they are HORRIBLE for you. They have close to NO nutritional value at all. I was eating a pack a day for lunch, due to convience and price... Bad idea... It took me about 10 months to get in, and I'm still working on it. Just make sure that you dont starve yourself(I did that, got down to 235, then as soon as I started eating again, I gained 30 lbs back), and stay motivated. You can do it, its just gonna take time and effort. Just wanted to give you a little motivation; hope it helps you out. Good luck!

Find out from your local recruiter if they offer the ARMS test. If you come in a little over the body fat % you may still qualify for the ARMS. On the ARMS test you have to step up and down on a 16 inch box for 5 mins at a steady pace, then they take your heart rate. After that you have to do 15 pushups in one minute. The BMI for males is 26% to 30%. The test is very physically demanding, but if you dont give up you can pass it. I had a female pass it a month ago so I know it can be done. Good luck on everything!

just a suggestion to go along with everyone else. as far as eating you have to eat a recommended 6 times a day. Not full meals but a balance of protein and carbs. I really recommend a book called "Eating for Life' by Bill Philips. There are menu plans excerise tips and some really great recipes. As everyone has said you have to take it one step at a time. You have to do both strength (resistance) and cardio but not every day.

Every one has a program of their own that works for them. My suggestion is to figure out which excersies work for you do them for 6 weeks then change them around. And (this is my opinion) stay away from any of the mircle metabolism boosters. There is no substitue for good old fasion hard work and discipline

This is a great thread...it's nice to read notes from people who aren't afraid of a little hard work.

Here is my story:

I've been as high as 235 pounds. I'm now 5'11 and 190 at about 10% bodyfat.

I got the wakeup call, (3 of my grandparents were dead of heart attacks before 65) and went vegetarian some 12 years ago, and have since progressed through vegan to almost all raw vegan. In two different instances, I've dropped and maintained weight loss of over 10 pounds per week. These have taken me from 220 to 190.

I think that I have a LOT of valuable knowledge from listening to real thinkers on nutrition and hard-won personal experience from experimenting on myself. I did a 100 mile bike ride last year without specifically training for it, in the middle of training for my first Marathon , which I completed under 4 hours. I have continued running, and am training for my second. My pic on this board is from the Marathon last year. I can crank out 30 pullups in a minute, which seems pretty good, and do handstand pushups touching my head to the ground, but only a couple, they're hard.

The point of this is that I'm working on an eBook on rapid but healthy weight loss, based on my knowledge and experience. This will be a "No B.S." book about optimum nutrition for human beings, setting up for success, and being efficient with exercise and time. I firmly believe that this information will provide a very valuable "kickstart" to the weight loss efforts of anyone who reads and applies this book. No herbs, no complex math, no difficult schedules or exotic or packaged foods, and most importantly, no bizarre, unspupported theories.

I think that an initial rapid, positive weight loss success/experience will help reinforce good habits, and that the cycle will be easier to sustain from there. Hopefully, the Guard will give you good food options while they have you.

I have created a survey to gather input on the book, at

http://losetenpoundsperweek.com/

I'd like to be helpful to the people on this board, so here are some tips I haven't seen in this thread yet:

-Eat REAL food. If your GREAT GREAT GREAT Grandparents wouldn't recognize it (about 100 years ago), then it's NOT food. Here's how to tell: real food doesn't come in a sealed box, bottle, jar, can, or plastic pouch. Real food comes from the Produce department...anything else is a condiment...that means little dollops on the side.

It's Summer, so it's a great time to fill up on watermelon, berries, peaches, pineapples...and bananas for a base. It's all about nutrients per calorie. Hefting a 40# box of bananas is good work (for extra credit, don't use a cart), and you'll actually save time shopping and prepping your meals, and probably money, too.

The first time I dropped over 10# (20) in a week, was going from cooked vegan to mostly raw vegan. That was in Hawaii, and I was at a fitness event where I was working hard (ran a total of 15 miles, which is about what I did just today, my long run day of the week), and eating papaya, bananas, mangos, and pineapple. All the water moved some of the 'backup' I'd accumulated. I think that everyone in America could use an extra water flush of their 'system', and it's much nicer to put it in the front side, if you know what I mean.

-Exercise efficiently. If I have to invest a half hour to get to the gym, park, change, and shower, I try to hit 1000 calories an hour, which I can do on the rower. On the NordicTrack treadmill that goes to 50% incline, in 42 minutes. Rowing is great, because it's cardio, muscular, and will toughen up your hands all at once. If you are less fit, the same principles still apply...whatever moves more of your body, burns calories, and provides some resistance training is good. Spin cycling seems good, because of the cardio, leg work, and willingness to persevere will serve you well. The 'girlie' weight classes with the music are great- makes the time go by, and if you squat 50 or 60# for 5 minutes, you will burn for sure, and keep burning, because muscle burns fat.

Just a couple of weeks ago, I got a free week at Gold's, and did exactly as above, ate about 1200 calories of fruit and a massive salad with a half avocado for dinner (about 300 calories), and dumped over 10#. Some of those days were two a days, spinning a.m. and p.m. or rowing and aggressive 50% treadmill. NO JOKE.

I think that anyone who can come close to sustaining a program like this, someone who has ever been athletic, maybe still does physical work but just eats badly, will get a real boost.

The pounds off, the feeling of achievement, and the 'cleanout' are a powerful boost. I've seen all of my running times improve since I dropped my last 10.

Disclaimer: Listen to your body, don't row if you have serious back issues, don't try to do pullups over a tank of crocodiles, don't eat raw eggs, don't lift heavy weights you can't put down safely, DO get good advice from qualified people.

I hope that I havent offended anyone, and wish you ALL the Best.

Thank You for your Service!

one thing you could do is stop drinking soda and other soft drinks. Sodas are extremely high in calories and have a lot of sugar. Another thing you could do is not drink beer.

I want to join the Guard too, but I'm 130 lbs overweight. I really want to join up, and this is the ONLY thing that's stopping me. How do I go about losing all this weight? My grandmother died in late 2001 because she was obese and I don't want to be next!

My name is ryan and I've been enlisted since April 5th 05 I can tell you how to loose the weight. This diet thing might suck but if your dedicated it will be easy. The way I lost 15 in 1 month I'm not bull****ing I ate chicken every day without and sause or bread the only bread I eat is Sara Lee 100% Whole Grain Wheat. It about 2.50 a loaf but it helps if u buy the whole grain make sure the first Indgrdent is NOT!! Enriched flour thats sugar and thats turns in to fat. Physical Training I read your SOS What you need to do is start slow and than start running but not sprinting. What I do is I drink 8 liters a day and go running so I now that I'm hydradend I suck a spelling. Water is you new buddy Water is the biggest diet secret no fats. sugars.salt nothing. It also remove toxins and if your not pissing at least every 15 min you at drinking enough. Dont but pills or shakes, shakes has sugars. Before you are doing push ups work on your form your arm have to break 90 degress that means you triceps have to be flush with your back . I have more Ideas just email back if want. I'm trying to think back to when I was trying to lose weight after my babies were born. I refuse to do supplements/diet pills (I work in a pharmacy and we won't sell them). The biggest thing is to burn more calories than you eat. That's it, bottom line. It's up to you to figure out the equation of "how?" and what works FOR YOU.

If you can find any piece of gold from this, take it and run with it! The rest, just ignore.

Things that DIDN'T work for me were lean cuisine meals and the likes. I could pack away 3 of those and count it as a meal. Slim-fast? No way. That's supposed to take the place of a meal, I just couldn't do it. I would drink one or two and THEN still eat a meal.

What worked for me? Just planning ahead and NOT being hungry. If you starve yourself or pick like a bird, you are gonna drive yourself crazy and get really low blood sugar and then just binge (I did). I stuffed myself to the gills, but I made sure it was 1) low-calorie, and 2) something I really liked.

Sugar free jello. YUM! Might not sound that fabulous, but it really is good. I think a whole box- yes, the WHOLE STINKING BIG MIXING BOWL- has only 80 calories.

Veggies- I love broccoli and spinach. I could eat a huge bowl of it for dinner. I made sure I used the condiments I liked. Personally, I really liked red wine vinegar on top. Piles of sauerkraut.

Snackies- gotta love snackies. I tried to stick with "not quite so bad" things like baked chips, or pretzels. Anything that crunches and excites your tastebuds is good. Stay away from the dips! BAD for you!

Salads are good- iceberg lettuce gets really boring. Try a nice spring mix or spinach salad, the darker the leaves, the better for you. Be very sparing with the dressing. Either use the real stuff in extreme moderation, or get a nice-tasting fake one (fake meaning lo-cal). If you don't like it, try another. I refuse to eat fake bleu cheese, they just taste nasty. There's a few raspberry viniagrettes that are wonderful.

I tried to stay away from fast food unless I was having a serious hormonal craving for salt and fat. Before, it was so easy just to run for a burger and fries because it was convenient. Now, I just go there about twice a month, because I really REALLY need some fries before I hurt someone! The rest of the time, I pack my own lunch.

Find some condiments you love. Mustard is really good. Honey mustard is great. I also like vinegar on a lot of stuff, but I'm weird.

Go with the sugar free candies if you need to, and pick something that takes a while to go thru. I like lemon drops. If you truly need a chocolate fix, just go to a gas station and grab a couple little midget tootsie rolls for a penny a piece. It will satisfy you without the 200 calories of a big candy bar.

Find the protein that you like that is also healthy. I personally can't stand most meat, so a steak is out of the question. But I can open a can of tuna and down it. I also like hard-boiled eggs. You need to remember to get enough protein.

I don't know about your lifestyle and what you usually consume. Yes, stay away from the booze, if you imbibe. If you drink pop, switch to diet. I really packed it on when I got a job where I could drink pop at my desk. After a 6 pack of Mountain Dew at work, I blimped out and almost hit Women's sizes. I switched to Diet, and shed the weight off. Not that diet is healthy for you, but it's a start. If you don't like the taste of diet, look elsewhere. I found about 4 that i really enjoy- diet MD, diet MD code red, diet Dr. Pepper, and diet Cream Soda. YUM!!!

Water- go with water- it's the best choice. And really, if you remember to add ice- it really does taste wonderful and it refreshes you. A few drops of lemon juice make it great.

The best line I heard that I will always remember- "I'm not on a diet, I'm on a food program." Don't think of it as a diet, and you will not have the negative conotations associated with starving yourself!

well, I've rambled~ best of luck to you; YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Hello there

I just signed and swore in yesterday, july 31, 2006, and I was 20 pounds over weight for a girl its a lot. I lost 16 pound isn 1 week in a half.....thinking its dangerouse, no, not at all. I was at 36.2 % body fat and dropped to 30.1 % body fat and I feel great and hey I passed tape yay!!!!! Anyways, my recruiter gave me a diet, its for overweight patients that are abput to undergo heart surgery. you still eat 3 meals a day but your limiting yourself to what they give tell you to eat. For example, breakfast is a grapefruit with a slice of toast with a tablespoon of peanut butter. I would take green tea pills, 3.75 at wal mart, between breakfast and lunch and then at lunch i would 1 cup of tuna with mustard and a slice of toast and then at dinner 3 oz lean meat with green beans wih carrots a cup of ice cream and water, but all before six!!!!!! then I would do some cardio run, walk of just do some house work. Belive me I wasnt skinny like a model i was decent i had a belly but thats gone and i continue to do al ot of cardio until i leave on the 13th of september for basic. If any of you guys want the diet let me know, it really works I would not lie!!!! you follow it for 3 days and eat normally for 4 days, not burgers or pizza but good healthy food. I did it in three days once you do it for the 3 days you stomach shrinks believe me i eat alot less now!!!!! If I can do it you can too. The GUARD is what motivated me it should motivate you too!!!

:D

Nice work on the 16#.

You get a nice bump whenever you step up your fitness program. I've lost up to 20# in a week and kept them off, going from vegan to raw vegan. And I recently did it again, dropping 10 in 7 starting from an already reasonably lean (for a guy) 14% bodyfat.

That's how I know it can be done.

Remember that the key to performance is nutrition per calorie, and nothing delivers that like fruits and vegetables.

If you care to know something interesting about peanuts, read on....

-Peanuts are some of the most pesticided crops around. Apparently, they are often grown in alternate years with cotton, which is the #1 most pesticided commercial crop...something about peanuts putting nitrogen back, because they are legumes....the book Diet for a Poisoned Planet made them and only one other thing 'red light' foods...can't recall the other...and they often have a have aflatoxins, which are carcinogens, too. And roasting damages the fats, and check out the corn syrup and hydrogenated oils in most commercial p. butter. I wouldn't feed commercial p. butter to any of my allies, for sure. Try raw organic almond butter. The little things add up.

I'm still working on my book :)

Hi All....I'm 41 and a woman and my recruiter recommended the Stew Smith diet on military.com to loose weight along with exercise. It's healthy and you eat healthy carbs, fruit, protein, etc.

Here's his article: http://www.military.com/NewContent/0,13190,Smith_062305,00.html

I've just started and I feel great and already lost 5lbs. Make sure not to bulk up..do those cardio workouts to loose inches. Also, pilates using strength bands is great for creating lean muscle, toning without bulking up.

Right now I'm just concentrating on getting my weight down before I try to do too much exercise.

Good luck all!:)

Okay, in September, I decided that at 41 years old, and over 50 pounds overweight, I wanted to join the Army Reserves or the Army National Guard. I currently work 2 jobs, because the area I live in (just outside of DC) is very expensive. I still have found the time to work out in the morning (25 min on the stationary bike, 100 crunches, 20 pushups, 20 sit-ups, and 20 squats), and for over an hour at night, 6 days a week. I do 30 mins of cardio, 30 min of resistance and 30 min of toning every night, mixing up the exercises to keep my body from getting too accustomed to doing the same thing day after day. I watch my fat and carb intake, eat lots of fresh fruits and veggies, and in about 5 1/2 weeks, I have lost 18 pounds, and dropped 1 full dress size. Not easy for an old fat broad, but I feel pretty good about it. I still need to lose about 40 pounds to qualify, and I really want to do it by the first of the year, since I want to go into aircraft maintenance, and the training is at FT Rucker, and who the heck wants to go to FT Rucker in June?? It gets HOT there! Anyway the point to my rambling is that, although it is not easy, it is well worth it, I feel better right now, than I have in 15 years, and even if I don't make the weight in time (which I will because my boyfriend told me there was no way I would), I have done this for ME, and not for anyone else. When my boss (who works one job, has a stay-at-home wife) told me that he didn't have time for a 20 minute work-out 3 times a week, I had to tell him, with all due respect, of course, that he was full of crap. If it is worth it to you, you will make the time.
