The best way to improve on your push ups is to continue to do them. Keep on doing as many p/u as you can and when you reach muscle failure go to your knees and continue to do as many as you can until you can no longer do anymore. Take one to two minutes rest then start the process again. Doing three sets every time you do push ups should eventually help your upper body strength. If you have access to a gym, concentrate on upper body lifting to strengthen your arms and shoulders.

I think what he means by knees are what we called "girl pushup" in 5th grade. Do a pushup from you knees and not your toes.

If you can't do that many and have some money i think i would use free weights. buy a bench and set two weights "one arm type" or bench setup to bench press.Buy 70-80% of your weight in "weights".

. Start with say 80 pounds? Do 3 sets of 15 ,add weight until you can'd do the 3 sets. Then do it until you can add more weight.

This may not be the best way but it's the way im doing it and have seen before.

One of the things I am having my soldiers do, as well myself, is a modification of a program I got off another military training type website. Give this a shot... It also mimics in a way previous info provided by ABNMTN

1. Do as many push ups as you can do in one minute. These need to be from the toes, with your back straight and looking forward at a 45 degree angle - standard military style.

2. Take that number and divide it in 2 (in half) - use the following example as a guide:

If you can do 20 PU in one minute then you are at 10. Use this number as your normal push ups with half of this number for additional wide arm and diamond push ups:

-You will do three sets of the following excercises with the follwing repetitions to begin (take a one to two minute rest between sets - about 30 seconds to one minute between PU types:

1. Normal PU - 10 Repetitions
2. Wide armed PU - 5 repetitions (arms extended from your body)
3. Close hand/Diamond PU - 5
--REPEAT the above two more times (for 2 more sets) Set 1 = 10/5/5 (rest) Set 2 = 10/5/5 (rest) Set 3 = 10/5/5

at any point where during each of the three sets you cannot continue drop from your toes to your knees to reach the total number of PU per set. When you are able to do the above 3 sets without dropping to your knees to finish for one week, begin adding 1 to 3 repetitions per PU group - 10 becomes 11 or 12 / 5 becomes 6 or 7 - always being realistic with what you do to ensure you are able to attain your goals.

Try to do these at least once every day - 3/4 days a week minimum - with some added periodic PU's at another time in the day. It is not always necessary to get to mucscle failure - part of your goal is to increase your stamina to be able to do more and more...

Check the Health and Fitness section, I have a push up post that I am trying to keep up to date and helpful... I will post ideas on a running program at another time. What is your current running ability? (please post in the health/Fitness section - this allows to consolidate questions and answers to more people on these important subjects!)

hmm...Im gonna do that or at least try. lol

I hate push ups. I'd rather run to the point of fainting then do push ups. But I guess it's just because I can barely do them. I don't have much upper body strength at all!! Doing 10 pushups kills me. But I'm still working on it.

Are there any other exercises I could do at home to increase my upper body strength? I don't have access to a gym or weights. The only weights I have are 2 - 3 pounds. :(

:)

Lay on your back and do a bench press motion.

Here is a site with tons of exercise examples. Do exercises to workout your chest and triceps.

http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/exercises.htm

You can even break it down to use only certain equipment (dumbbells, machines, bodyweight...)

do variations of push-ups (close hand, wide grip, regular).

Do small sets (5 to 10) but do a lot of sets. Use your bed and 2 chairs (for your hands) and do elevated push-ups, where you go down in between the chairs. Work on your triceps, a big part of pushups. Do dips on a chair at home. Work on your shoulders, also used (although not as much) in pushups. Do side and front raises for your shoulders with your little weights. If you want it, you can make it happen.

Awesome, That sounds like it would really work your muscles! Especially going down between the chairs! wow! lol...

Yeah, I do want it and I'm gonna get it!

if i remember right, your triceps have to be even with your shoulder blades, so think about dipping your back just below your arms.

PFC Lowe

Right, IIRC your triceps have to be parallel to the ground

which is always a "subjective" standard based on the grader... that and the elbows locking out.

Most PT tests, you'll see people doing the worm or 1/2 pushups and getting away with it. Other times, you'll see people with their chest hitting the ground and not getting counted.

Getting prepared for BCT with push-ups is simple. Everynight do 25-50 uniform push-ups. Like the other post said. Take your time and head up. It will burn so you know it's working. Pretty much same thing with sit-ups. It's a work in progress just keep up with it and you should be just fine.

For the cuz who does not have a gym near by. I used to work out with a 27" TV, and stuff junk in the hamper and bench with that. It's all about having the modivation and drive to find something to work out with.
