I know you learn your job skills in AIT, but how is it compared to basic?
Thanks!

AIT is a similar training environment to Basic Training. Typically, things are a little more relaxed, and you have more privliges. Training is still physical, but it is more focused on job skills rather than physical fitness. There is a lot of classroom instruction, and hands-on training.

Well it depends a lot on what your MOS is or is going to be. Speaking as an MI soldier who did his AIT back in the late '80's, this is what I remember....
It definitely was not as physically demanding as Basic was, but we still did PT daily. In my MOS we had to spend all our time indoors in a secure building because of the nature of the job, which being as we were in Florida in the middle of summer was quite a blessing. Classes are intense and you're expected to learn a lot in a short amount of time. However since you're concentrating on a specific set of skills that you're expected to master, it's very doable. It all depends on how much you want to put into it.
We were also still expected to pass room inspections and maintain uniforms to a high standard. When we weren't in class our time was pretty much our own, to a degree, which again being in Florida in the middle of summer could sometimes be a bit of a distraction. ;) It was one of the best periods during my time in the Army and I have many great memories.
Of course if I'd been in a combat MOS, I might be singing a different story...it all depends.

I went to AIT in 2001 and it was very similar. Glad to hear the Army's consistent.

It all depends on what AIT you're at. I was at an intelligence AIT and it was close to what was described (though one of our veteran instructors said it was like college when he went though - civilian clothes and everything) but it's all relevant to what AIT you're at. My husband went though a more combat related MOS and from what he told me they were treated much like basic training but with a few privilages.

Must really depend on your MOS. I went through in '88, 13B, field artillery. It was OSUT (One Station Unit Training). There was practically no difference. They really only eased up a bit in the last week or week and a half. It's no biggie. You're already used to it anyway.
