The Hawaii Army National Guard (HIARNG) demands respect. When the regular Army troops left the garrisons in Hawaii for WWII, the HIARNG took over the reigns to the garrisons, and one unit deployed to fight in Europe. The battalion was composed of Japanese-American Guard members who displayed an unfaltering dedication to the United States. In 1959, the HIARNG became the first to employ the Nike-Hercules missile system as a deterrent against Soviet air attack.
