SGT Ashley Freiberger—Hero On Call

I joined the Army National Guard in the fall of my senior year of high school. Unlike most people, I did not have a reason to join. My friend asked me what I was doing for the next six years, and I said going to school. She said it was a dream of hers to join the military, but she didn't want to do it alone. She asked me to join with her, and I said yes.

This probably wasn't the smartest way to make a huge decision like this, but I am glad that I did. I can honestly say that joining the Army National Guard was the best decision of my life. It has opened up so many doors for me, including job opportunities, life experiences, military and civilian job skills, and the ability to pay for college.

Now, as an instructor and cadre member at an RSP (Recruit Sustainment Program) unit, I have the opportunity to share my knowledge and experience, and to prepare other new Soldiers for basic training and the future of their military careers.
