SSG Greg A. Kessie—Hero On Call
I joined the Indiana Army National Guard because of my desire to lead and be challenged. I attended Basic Combat Training while in high school, and Advanced Individual Training for the 19D Cavalry Scout MOS after graduating.
My first deployment to Bosnia, in 2002, became the foundation of my military career. I was an M-249 machine gunner with E/238th CAV, and a member of Stabilization Force 11. This was a time for me to develop my individual skills and challenge myself. Returning from a foreign country, I quickly began to realize how amazing the country I live in is.
I chose to use the outstanding National Guard education benefits to begin working toward my degree in criminal justice.
My latest deployment to Afghanistan in 2004, for Operation Enduring Freedom III, was a life-changing experience. I served as scout section leader and a platoon sergeant for Delta Co. 1-151st Infantry. I was lucky enough to work side by side with some of the best Soldiers in the world.
Without my experiences in the Indiana National Guard, I would not be where I am today.
