Will I be deployed immediately?
Deployment will not happen until you've been in the Guard for a few months and have completed all the necessary training to prepare you for the Language and Cultural Specialist job. And if necessary, the Guard will provide you with English proficiency courses.
Then, just like all American Soldiers, you will attend nine weeks of Basic Training to learn how to look, behave and perform as a Soldier. The final step after completing Basic Training is attending a six-week program about the fundamentals of translating, interpreting and advising the command on cultural issues.
How long do I have to serve abroad?
Your service overseas will be for one or more years, depending on the Guard's need.
When I come back to the U.S., where will I be based?
Just like any other Guard member, you can serve close to where you live. The Guard has 3,200 armories around the U.S., so chances are you can train near your hometown.
What will I do after deployment?
When you return you can live at home and serve in your home community while going to school or working full-time. You'll be able to help your neighbors and support your community through the Guard.
When will I get my first paycheck?
You will start getting paid after you sign your contract and start Basic Training.
What type of support is available for my family while I'm deployed?
The Guard has a very supportive network of other families and professionals to help your loved ones get through your deployment. Visit www.guardfamily.org for more details.
